Nizoral is the brand name for a prescription medication used most often to treat fungal infections. It is used as a shampoo to treat dandruff and scalp fungal infections. Do you think of using Nizoral for hair loss treatment? Then read my Nizoral review here.
Nizoral Review 2020
Nizoral is also known as Ketoconazole. It is available by prescription in shampoo form to treat fungal scalp conditions like dandruff that do not respond to over the counter methods. In the U.S., a weaker shampoo is available without a prescription. You can buy it on Amazon or in local drugstores.
Do you have ringworm? Then you can use Nizoral to kill it. You have to treat it for several weeks to ensure you have eliminated it from your skin.
Do you have dandruff? Does it respond to normal dandruff shampoo? If not, you can fill your prescription for this rather strong medicated shampoo that will definitely kill your fungal infection, along with a few side effects.
Nizoral for Hair Loss
Nizoral has no uses in preventing hair loss other than the incidental hair loss caused on the scalp by ringworm. It is purely an antifungal shampoo. It has side effects too.
What I Like
I like nothing about this product. I tend to be a naturalist and am intimidated by the long list of scientific words that I do not understand.
What I Don’t Like
I do not like the long list of words I do not understand. I also am not thrilled about the way this is proposed to be a safe treatment, yet the package insert is filled with a long list of possible side effects and cautions.
This product treats skin conditions, yet it can cause rashes and itching. In addition to these rather innocuous side effects, you can feel abdominal pain, dizziness, tingling, vomiting, impotence, blood count abnormalities, and liver dysfunction. However, we are supposed to believe that the medicated is usually tolerated well. I am sorry if I sound skeptical, but I am.
How to Use
Nizoral is a medicinal shampoo, a drug, for the treatment of skin infections caused by fungi or yeasts in teenagers and adults. The scalp can be treated with the shampoo.
Active ingredient: Ketoconazole 1% or 2%
Wet the hair with warm water and apply Nizoral medicinal shampoo (equivalent to about 1-2 tea spoons) and make it foam. Leave the shampoo on for 3-5 minutes. Rinse hair and scalp thoroughly. The shampoo should not get into the eyes!
The recommended dose is as follows:
Treatment: Use twice a week for 2-4 weeks.
To prevent relapse: use once every 1-2 weeks.
This product should only be used under the supervision of a doctor. If you buy the store version, use it according to the package directions carefully. Do not use it for long periods of time because that is when liver damage becomes possible. Discontinue use if you notice any problematic side effects and consult your doctor.
Make sure that you report any and all medications you are currently taking to your doctor. Nizoral interacts with a long list of other medications, and that can prove problematic for you. If you have questions, make sure to ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Cost
Nizoral for hair costs about $15 on Amazon.
Conclusion
I am not a doctor, so I cannot tell you to use Nizoral shampoo for hair loss or not. That choice is yours. I will tell you that unless I have some horrible fungus that does not respond to anything else, I will not use this product. I do not like the side effects or the interactions.
